1. Listen and Imitate

  • Technique: Listen closely to native speakers and mimic their pronunciation.

I use to do this a lot when I was abroad! If possible, put yourself in situations where your target language is the only one you will hear.

For example; in the morning put on a podcast in that language that you find interesting.

Here is an example of a Japanese video I use to watch in the mornings!

Here is a Spanish and German video practice that I thought was very helpful as well. If you are learning a different language then I suggest typing ” (Language) conversation practice”

2. Focus on Sounds

  • Technique: Pay attention to specific sounds in the language that are different from your native tongue.
  • Example: Practice distinguishing between similar sounds like “th” and “s” in English.

3. Practice with Tongue Twisters

  • Technique: Engage with tongue twisters to improve clarity and dexterity of speech.
  • Example: Recite challenging phrases like “She sells seashells by the seashore.”
  • Japanese Twister:
    • Akamakigami, aomakigami, kiimakigami
    • 赤巻紙、青巻紙、黄巻紙
    • English: Red wrapping paper, blue wrapping paper, yellow wrapping paper.
  • Spanish Twister:
    • Juan junta juncos junto a la zanja.
    • English: Juan gathers branches next to the ditch.
  • German Twister:
    • Zehn zahme Ziegen zogen zehn Zentner Zucker zum Zoo.
    • English: Ten tame goats pulled ten hundred pounds of sugar to the zoo.

4. Record and Review

  • Technique: Record yourself speaking and compare it to native speakers.
  • Example: Use voice recording apps to track progress over time.

5. Work with a Language Partner

  • Technique: Partner with someone fluent in the language for regular practice.
  • Example: Conduct conversational sessions focused on pronunciation correction.

Some great places to find a language partner are Discord, Italki, HelloTalk and Reddit.

6. Use Phonetic Transcriptions

  • Technique: Learn phonetic symbols to understand pronunciation patterns.
  • Example: Utilize resources like the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA).

7. Practice Stress and Intonation

  • Technique: Master the rhythm, stress, and intonation of the language.
  • Example: Learn where to place emphasis in sentences for natural speech.

8. Listen to Audio Books or Podcasts

  • Technique: Immerse yourself in spoken language through audio resources.
  • Example: Follow along with transcripts to aid comprehension.

9. Receive Feedback

  • Technique: Seek feedback from teachers or language exchange partners.
  • Example: Incorporate corrections into your practice routine.

10. Consistent Daily Practice

  • Technique: Dedicate regular time each day to practice pronunciation.
  • Example: Set achievable goals and monitor progress.
