1. Listen and Imitate
- Technique: Listen closely to native speakers and mimic their pronunciation.
I use to do this a lot when I was abroad! If possible, put yourself in situations where your target language is the only one you will hear.
For example; in the morning put on a podcast in that language that you find interesting.
Here is an example of a Japanese video I use to watch in the mornings!
Here is a Spanish and German video practice that I thought was very helpful as well. If you are learning a different language then I suggest typing ” (Language) conversation practice”
2. Focus on Sounds
- Technique: Pay attention to specific sounds in the language that are different from your native tongue.
- Example: Practice distinguishing between similar sounds like “th” and “s” in English.
3. Practice with Tongue Twisters
- Technique: Engage with tongue twisters to improve clarity and dexterity of speech.
- Example: Recite challenging phrases like “She sells seashells by the seashore.”
- Japanese Twister:
- Akamakigami, aomakigami, kiimakigami
- 赤巻紙、青巻紙、黄巻紙
- English: Red wrapping paper, blue wrapping paper, yellow wrapping paper.
- Spanish Twister:
- Juan junta juncos junto a la zanja.
- English: Juan gathers branches next to the ditch.
- German Twister:
- Zehn zahme Ziegen zogen zehn Zentner Zucker zum Zoo.
- English: Ten tame goats pulled ten hundred pounds of sugar to the zoo.
4. Record and Review
- Technique: Record yourself speaking and compare it to native speakers.
- Example: Use voice recording apps to track progress over time.
5. Work with a Language Partner
- Technique: Partner with someone fluent in the language for regular practice.
- Example: Conduct conversational sessions focused on pronunciation correction.
Some great places to find a language partner are Discord, Italki, HelloTalk and Reddit.
6. Use Phonetic Transcriptions
- Technique: Learn phonetic symbols to understand pronunciation patterns.
- Example: Utilize resources like the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA).
7. Practice Stress and Intonation
- Technique: Master the rhythm, stress, and intonation of the language.
- Example: Learn where to place emphasis in sentences for natural speech.
8. Listen to Audio Books or Podcasts
- Technique: Immerse yourself in spoken language through audio resources.
- Example: Follow along with transcripts to aid comprehension.
9. Receive Feedback
- Technique: Seek feedback from teachers or language exchange partners.
- Example: Incorporate corrections into your practice routine.
10. Consistent Daily Practice
- Technique: Dedicate regular time each day to practice pronunciation.
- Example: Set achievable goals and monitor progress.
